Public Humanities Initiative

Through its Public Humanities Initiative (PHI), the Kaplan Institute seeks to promote humanistic scholarship at Northwestern that intentionally and ethically engages, informs, learns from, and supports diverse publics.

In this way, the Public Humanities can refer to a wide range of publicly facing projects, from podcasts to historic walking tours to public syllabi. More fundamentally, however, it reflects a set of ideals and commitments to making scholarship more meaningful for communities beyond the university. It is one of the core goals of PHI to further foster such commitments by supporting faculty, students, and practitioners on campus who seek to do this type of work.
